School House matches, Huddersfield New College – probably the most competitive cricket I played. We almost came to blows, but I seem to remember we won the senior trophy in my final year 1958-66

School second team – captain, 1966. Great, mostly a refuge for the first XV with some who didn’t want to play in the first XI (eg Lindsell). Good venues at Wheelwrights’ Dewsbury, Roundhay and King Edwards, Sheffield.

Medical Unit – Heath Hospital evening league, Cardiff 1974-77. Cardiology had all the best players. We played at Whitchurch, the local ‘bin’. Part of that movement that saw great sports facilities, but I think used by the staff mostly (similar to David Lewis hospital in Manchester). Billy Boston’s dad was a resident until his death in the middle 1970s. He was admitted to the medical unit with lung ca. Billy visited.

Medical Unit – Manchester University evening league, MRI, late 1970s-82.

Thorp Perrow – country house cricket near Bedale, N Yorkshire 1982-85. Home of Sir John Ropner.44 fixtures per year and a tour to Skegness. Team mostly came from Snape and surrounds, with the odd ringer.

Northallerton RUFC – evening league 1982-85. Teams along the A19.

Huddersfield Medics 1985-90. First contact with the Casuals. We played at the YMCA ground next to the private hospital, Nuffield as it was then.

Almondbury Casuals – nomadic Sunday gentlemen’s cricket in W Yorkshire 2000-2005.
